Jan Zelfer-Redmond
Jan Zelfer-Redmond creates large oils on canvas in the abstract expressionist tradition with influences from Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Cornell. Drawing from ideas and verbalized fragments which strike her as odd or bizarre, "ideas or objects that are beyond, or outside of the normal, ordinary . . . treatment of life", she blends colors and textures. Then by overdrawing with meandering lines which border on legibility and suggest significance, Zelfer-Redmond teases the viewer into closer attention to work in which her process is exploratory as well as intentional and where her abstracted or non-objective forms offer a representation of the spiritual and intuitive.
After her B.A. from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Jan earned a B.F.A in Painting from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Her work has been shown in several solo and group exhibitions, and more than 20 juried shows. Jan also was featured in a one-person show at the Sioux City Art Center.
