February 15, 2019 - April 6, 2019

Christopher Chiavetta | Joel Elgin | Crit Streed | Amy Uthus

Opening Reception Friday, February 15, 5-7 pm

The collection of artists exhibiting new work in FLUID GROUND are all concerned with natural elements. The resulting visual representations, while varied, are all in conversation with one another. Ceramic artist Amy Uthus works with a deft hand in her delicate porcelain pieces. Uthus’ vessels carry a certain visual weight and are the inverse of the spire shaped forms shown in Christopher Chiavetta’s large-scale abstract paintings. Both Chiavetta and Streed manifest organic forms through their line work and sense of positive and negative space. The fluidity of Streed’s sumi ink marks and sparse gouache color palette are a stark contemplative contrast to Joel Elgin’s bold, energetic color intaglio prints depicting storms on unsettled waters.

December 7, 2018 - January 19, 2018

Bill BarnesDoug Shelton

Opening Reception December 7, 5-7 pm

The featured artists for our Annual Small Works Show are both Des Moines natives. A hometown is not the only thing Barnes and Shelton have in common. While each artist has his own distinctive and highly collected style, they both find inspiration from their experiences in the American Southwest. Their use of concealed narrative, symbolism, and a romanticized realism is evident in their respective paintings.

MENDING FRACTURES & Fall Gallery Night

October 12, 2018 - December 1, 2018

Kim HutchisonLee Emma Running

Opening Reception October 12, 5-9 pm

Join us Friday, October 12 for the opening reception of MENDING FRACTURES: New Work by Lee Emma Running and Kim Hutchison. We are celebrating the artist’s unique visual representations of repurposing and giving discarded objects a new life. Hutchison’s collage and assemblage works are often about creating for the sake of creation and the challenge of using materials such as fabric, paper, paint, and drawing tools in order to give cast offs new context. Running’s creations investigate the beauty and complexity of natural phenomena. Recently, Running has been focused on environmental implications and natural causes that result in incomplete deer skeletons found in the landscape. In re-articulating the cleaned and polished skeletons and filling in the missing fragments with cast glass, she is able to assign new meaning and a certain preciousness to an otherwise disregarded decay process.
